Pattern Review: Ottobre 4/2013, Views 14 & 15

_DSC0055 If you've never sewn an Ottobre pattern before, you've really been missing out.

I was recently turned on to these Finnish sewing pattern designs by a friend, and they are just fabulous. I'm not sure why more American sewists don't use them - I can only imagine they are turned off by the layered pattern pieces (all pieces stacked on top of each other to save space) and the necessity of tracing and adding seam allowances. I have to tell you though...if those things have been holding you back, get over it!! These patterns are so worth a little bit of extra time (and it really doesn't add that much!).

Perhaps the brief instructions and lack of photos/drawings to guide the sewist step-by-step are turnoffs, too, but again...GET OVER IT! The instructions are so good, you don't NEED the detailed images. Even if you are a beginner sewist, I still think you would love making these adorable outfits. Oh, and there ARE more detailed sections for completing more complicated things like adding neckline binding or sewing a zipper. And everything's in English!

Just look ^^ at those gorgeous outfits! The magazine itself is just stunning.

I made this particular outfit for Harper in about two hours (sewing time alone - I traced/cut the pattern one night earlier in the week). It is a little big on her petite frame, but it should be perfect by the time the cooler weather is in full-swing. I made her a size 92 (US 2T). The 4/2013 issue of Ottobre Designs is particularly full of designs for this size and up, so it's going to get a LOT of use.

Side note: has anyone figured out a good way to get decent photos of an active two-year-old?! (!!!) Not me...so these will have to do.

See that? ^^ My first time top stitching a neckline binding with a double needle. I am IN LURVE. Looks so professional - and it was simple-to-do.

Did I mention how hard it is to get a two-year-old to be still?

Harper just LOVES the pockets.

The fabric is all from the Doodles collection at Joann. They have been getting in tons of great knits lately, so I am one happy sewing mama.

_DSC0092 I just adore this girl.
